Course 2: Traditional Jewish Textual Sources on Gender and Sexuality

February 18, 2025

Course Overview

This course earns 1 credit towards smicha

This course aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Jewish thinking regarding the traditional Jewish texts on gender and sexuality. We will discuss Torah and traditional rabbinic sources on these issues, with a focus on how these apply to 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals. This class will provide a broad overview of the major issues and dynamics in traditional texts on this issue, as well begin to prepare students for how to consider speaking about these in a current context.

Course Learning Objectives

At the end of this 15+ hour course survey of traditional Jewish texts, students will be able to:

  • Identify the traditional Jewish texts’ understanding of gender and sexuality
  • Identify the traditional Jewish texts relevant to 2SLGBTQIA+ Jewish thinking and identity
  • Identify several queer-positive approaches to understanding these traditional texts

Eye Opening

I learned so much from this class - opened my eyes to so much I never knew and how much pain there is. I want to help. I have seen pain in family members, including my cousins and extended family.

Thorough and thought provoking

This is the first time I am delving deeply into these themes. I appreciate the depth of research, texts and personal insights that Rabbi Siritsky has presented in this course. This is a course that makes one think about the type of rabbi they want to become.
