Judaism, Jewish Community & Race

August 6, 2020

About This Course

This is a short survey on the intersection of Judaism, Jewish community, race, class and more, as told through the lives of individual Jews of Color (JOC). No course can ever fully speak to the experiences of JOC. No course can ever fully cover the academic ground on race in America. Our hope at PRS is to give a space for JOC to voice their thoughts on difficult issues, and to learn that questions of diversity and inclusion are more complicated than anyone can imagine.

There is no book to purchase for this course. Students will learn from these contributors to our class, as well as through other materials sourced from other Jewish leaders and academic.

This course is made possible in partnership with Tribe Herald Media. Four of the five presenters are contributors to TribeHerald as writers. All are members of the Tribe Herald Slack channel. Rabbi Patrick Beaulier serves only as the proctor for this course and grades the two reflection assignments

Successful completion of this course is graded based on a mix of quizzes and short assignments.

This course is .5 credits towards smicha

Challenges us to think how we will use our Jewish voices as rabbis

Ultimately, this course and the final readings force us to confront an uncomfortable truth: moral progress is neither automatic nor guaranteed. Jewish voices need to remain intellectual, relevant, and elevate humanity. I would be very interested to see this course updated, as we are living with fresh challenges now as Jews in the West.

Valuable course

This is a great class with some issues that I hope can be resolved. It is very hard to hear the interview with Yitz Jordan. It looks like that was also the case with another recording, which was later removed. The Yitz Jordan interview is worth keeping—even as is, if necessary. But could a transcript be added? I am so glad to have been introduced to these people.

Modern Stories and Classical Thought

I think that this class might benefit from a bit of updating. I think that some of the interviews had a strong story still today and were clearly impactful. A few interviews were not as clear. The confusing part was the modern emphasis until the final historical paper at the end. Maybe starting with some history first? I was a bit confused but overall glad I took the class.
