Mishnah

December 12, 2022

Introduction to the Mishnah

The course covers the things you need to know in order to study Mishna deeply and to understand its place in the canon of Rabbinic Literature and the development of Jewish practice. We look at key features of the legal corpus as a whole and the typical styles and forms it uses to teach individual laws. We will also summarize scholarly insights into how and why it took shape when it did and how it came to shape all subsequent rabbinic discourse.

This course is .5 credits towards smicha

Rabbi Cahan's courses should all be compulsory

I have been most intellectually challenged by Rabbi Cahan's courses. Many times, I feel overwhelmed by how little I have studied Mishnah and Gemara, and if I will ever be able to catch up on this knowledge. But then I breathe and realize that what is important is my intention to study and absorb all these foundation texts over a lifetime. A tough but excellent course.
