Practical Halacha

May 7, 2021

This course is currently closed

About This Course

Judaism has survived, thrived, and grown because Jews have consistently found ways to apply Jewish law and wisdom to everyday scenarios in life. In this practical Halacha class we will examine several different topics through the lens of Jewish law. Halakha comes from the Hebrew root for halach– translated at “the walk” or “the way.” Each topic will include a real-world case study and related texts from our Tradition in order to consider what guidance Judaism might have for us regarding the issue at hand. Class topics are: Body Health, Environment, Money, War, Poverty and Health Care, and Business Ethics.

Students are expected to write up how they would answer the questions presented towards the case study using the wisdom our Tradition. However, this is for personal reflection only. The course is graded by quizzes at the end of each topic.

Course Topics

  • The Body
  • The Environment
  • Money
  • War
  • Poverty and Health Care
  • Business Ethics

Students Also Enjoyed

  • Death & Dying
  • Women in Torah

Great reading materials

The content of the course was excellent, with intriguing, real-life questions and a good range of rabbinic and contemporary source material, ripe for teaching or sermon writing. The videos were somewhat disappointing, mostly reading the materials themselves with little added insight. Would love to discuss a case study live with others who have taken the course.

a wonderful introduction

Really enjoyed the structure of setting each class up with a real world case study and then delving into relevant Jewish text and modern thought. I loved that, in classic Jewish tradition, the texts and commentaries rarely led to definitive answers, but instead pointed me toward more incisive questions. As a result, I found myself desiring more opportunity for back and forth discussion.
