Prerequisite Knowledge: Students should have a sense of Hassidic thought and history, and an ability to read short passages in Hebrew.
Course Description
In the 1700s in Ukraine, Rebbe Nachman of Breslev developed and taught hitbodedut as a particular practice of private devotion. Hitbodedut continues to be an integral part of Breslev Hassidic life, and is sometimes also taught as a style of Jewish meditation for members of the general Jewish community. In this Havrutah we will look at some of Rebbe Nachman’s writings about hitbodedut; we will also have the opportunity to explore a personal practice of hitbodedut, and consider when and how to guide others in this practice.

Learning Verification Method
By the conclusion of the Havrutah students will be able to discuss three things: (1) What is hitbodedut and how it is unique; (2) Determining who might be best suited to a practice of hitbodedut and how to offer instruction; (3) Some challenging areas of practicing hitbodedut and how to work with difficulties.
Note: your educator will need to fill out this form below for you. Please provide it to them if they do not already have it.
What Students Will Learn
Participants will read some of Rebbe Nachman’s original writings and explore how hitbodedut is very different from methods of meditation that stress developing calmness, awareness, and insight. Participants will develop a capacity to guide themselves and others in integrating hitbodedut into daily life, and will learn a general typology of meditation styles that helps to clarify the unique design of hitbodedut, and how it contrasts with other styles of meditation.
